The picturesque city of Orchha situated on the banks of the River Betwa, was founded in 1531 A.D. by Rudra Pratap Singh who was one of the Rajput rulers belonging to the Bundela Dynasty who ruled over the district of Bundelkhand to which Orchha belonged. The town of Orchha was so overrun with impregnable, thick forests so that when it was discovered, it was named ‘Orchha’ (hidden). Under the rule of Bundela dynasty Orchha flourished as a thriving cultural enter. The son of Rudra Pratap Singh, Bharti Chand (1531-1554), shifted the capital from Garh Kundar to Orchha, because the site was a better place to fortify against the growing Mughal pressure. After almost a decade of mayhem, Bir Singh Deo (1605-1627) became the king of Orchha who was perhaps the greatest of the Bundela Kings of Orchha.
Orchha’s golden age was not to last. In the early 17th century, the Mughal Emperor Jahangir laid siege to the town, causing much destruction and as a result many of the town’s structures were destroyed.
Orchha is more than the historic monuments and ancient temples it houses. It has offerings for visitors of all kinds — be it nature lovers or adventure junkies, or history buffs alike. While Orchha tourist places primarily comprise the historic monuments built in the erstwhile era, the place is also blessed with a scenic natural landscape.
The majestic River Betwa flows through the town of Orchha, enchanting visitors with a picturesque sunset view while they explore the ruined settlement. The town is also home to a wide range of fauna as the Orchha Wildlife Sanctuary houses exotic creatures, giving wildlife enthusiasts an experience of a lifetime.
