There was turmoil before his birth as a heavenly voice had predicted that Krishna’s maternal uncle Kansa would be killed by the eighth born of Devaki. The tyrannical king Kansa killed the first seven children of Devaki. When Devaki gave birth to Krishna, Lord Vishnu revealed himself to the couple and instructed Vasudeva to take the newborn baby (Vishnu himself) to Gokul by crossing the Yamuna river and exchanging the child with the newborn daughter of his friend Nanda and Instructed to bring him back to jail so that the child can be saved from the evil hands of Kansa. Therefore technically, Mother Yashoda and Nanda of Gokul region of Mathura were the foster parents of Lord Krishna.
